Today I am savoring summer, even in 100 degree weather. I am trying to savor the moments before fall. After spending what seems like every waking moment building not one but two businesses, I needed space to intentionally invest in what really matters, people, relationships, building a life. It is a juggling act to balance everything these days!
This morning’s sermon was about #RiskingIt with our faith. I’ve been playing it safe for a while. I was burned out, overwhelmed and just surviving. Yet deep inside my soul longs for so much more. During worship we sang a song with the words “He holds our head up and reminds me who I am“. Even though we think we know, sometimes we need that reminder. I love the picture of Jesus holding our face up and speaking life in us. Like a father with his child.
This week my small group went to hear DSB, a Journey cover band at a concert in the park. How have I never heard them before? This was a concert that took me right back to my high school years. Super fun! Another morning I met a friend for breakfast and was thankful for friendships that stand the test of time. Who root you on, who know the worst things in life you have done and love you anyway.
Lately, I seem to be a lady who does brunch – a lot. One of my new favorite breakfast spots is Grits Fullerton. Opened just a few months ago, it is Chef Cody Shorts first restaurant. He has been a chef at Hopscotch and then at Nieuport 17 but I believe this is his first venture. The space is bright, cheery and modern industrial. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
The first visit was with my aunt and cousins. We tried the Pancake Balls which were amazing. Here is the description hazelnut ganache, cashew butter, berries, raspberry syrup and they tasted that good.
My cousin had the Pork and Grits which is enough for two meals. She had a large to go bag! Look at it:
Linda had a pork argue that is not currently on the menu but equally delicious.
For fun this weekend I took my oldest nephew, Luke, to give it a try. He just started his Sophomore year in high school so I got to catch up on how things are going. He LOVES food so I thought he would enjoy Grits. We had a great time and started with one of their new dishes, the Yukon potatoes topped with lime and Cotija cheese served with creme fraiche. They were crispy, tangy, melt in your mouth good.
He went for the Tri-Tip and Eggs. He loves red meat. It is served with a red pepper coulis smeared across the plate. More potatoes and an egg.
I ordered from the Boring Menu and had classic Bacon and Eggs. This dish comes with two ginormous scones I sadly had to pass on. I love scones, but my body, not so much. My nephew managed to help me out and eat one! We left well fed and happy.
Are there new restaurants you think I should try? Leave them in the comments!
Here are a few things that I am savoring this week:
- I am a girl with multiple books in progress all the time. Here is her excuse. What is on your summer list?
- I made these with Livi last week. Dined with Luke yesterday and next on my list is a train trip from here with Chase. How cool does this new station look? If you follow True Detective, you have seen it before!
- Strawberries are everywhere – these had me drooling. Simple and classic
- This is my go to for days I am feeling a little tired and need a little lift.
- Mimosa Macarons – these are my to try immediately!
Hope you enjoyed your weekend and savored moments with your family and friends. Take time to enjoy the last weeks of summer!
